Eastern Star Cookbook, 1923
Three cups oatmeal, 3 cups flour, 1 1/2 cups brown sugar. 1 cup lard; mix salt into lard; 1 cup sour milk, 1 teaspoonful soda, 1 teaspoonful vanilla.
Roll very thin. Cut with cookie cutter.
Filling: 1 pound dates or raisins, 2 cups brown sugar, 2 cups water, vanilla.
Boil to paste, let cool; spread between cookies before baking.
