Sunday October 22, 2017: 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room and Downtown Library: Secret Lab

This event is intended for all ages.

Come pick out a new-to-you costume for this year! We'll also be doing a kids' craft!

This is a wonderful chance to save money, clear your closet, and pick out something snazzy for this year from the gently used and clean costumes dropped off at any Library Branch during the month of October.

Sewing Lab

Monday October 23, 2017: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Secret Lab

This event is intended for grade 6 - adult

Join us for an evening of sewing. We will have our lab's machines set up and staff will be on hand to show you the basics. You can bring a project you've been working on, or just stop by to practice your stitches.

We welcome all skill levels. No prior knowledge is necessary.

You are free to bring your own sewing machine and join our growing sewing community.

Kids Robotics Lab: Robot Relay Race with Brain Monkeys

Tuesday October 24, 2017: 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Secret Lab

This event is intended for grade K - 8

Kids Robotics Lab is a great introduction to robotics through LEGO Mindstorms and other robotics kits. Each session will have a different challenge.

Today's challenge is a robot relay race. Instruction is provided by the creative folks at Brain Monkeys. Materials will be provided.

Letterpress Lab & Making Type with Arie Koelewyn

Wednesday October 25, 2017: 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Secret Lab

Learn the basics of letterpress printing using handset type!

Workshop participants will learn how to compose, lock-up and print a small project on AADL’s vintage Kelsey letterpresses. Library staff and guest instructors from U-M's Wolverine Press will lead these workshops. Follow along with our scheduled activity or plan your own project—you’re the designer!

This week we'll also have a demonstration of how to create type using found objects by Arie Koelewyn of the Paper Airplane Press. Supplies will be provided and you'll have the opportunity to create your own printable wingdings.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS:

This program involves direct handling of lead-based type and is therefore not suitable for small children.

Mini Succulent Pumpkins!

Just in time for the Fall holidays! Join us to make beautiful, teeny-tiny decorations out of pumpkins and live succulents.

A fun and easy craft project, these pumpkins will bring holiday flair to your home for weeks on end.

This event is intended for adults and teens of all skill levels.

Board Game Afternoon

This event is intended for grade 6 - adult

Enjoy an afternoon of board games in the Secret Lab!

Games will include: Oregon Trail, Ticket to Ride, Yeti in my Spaghetti, Dominion, Sushi Go, Stratego, Grand Austria Hotel, Space Team, and more.

You are also welcome to bring your own games to play on our sturdy wood workbenches.

Fiber Arts Lab: Crochet

This event is intended for grade 6 - adult

Join us every other Monday for an evening of knitting and crochet. We will provide everything you need to get started. Stop in and learn the basics.

You can bring a project you've been working on, or just stop by to practice your stitches. We welcome all skill levels. No prior knowledge is necessary.

This week we will focus on crochet.

Hand Lettering Workshop with Jessica Krcmarik

Wednesday November 1, 2017: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Secret Lab

This event is intended for grade 6 -adult

Join us for an introduction to hand lettering, taught by designer and lettering artist Jessica Krcmarik. You'll learn typography basics, become acquainted with letterforms through practice alphabet sets, and get a basic understanding of design.

Bring along a favorite quote—Jessica will guide you through the process and help you to develop an illustrative style to bring it to life. You'll then learn how to sketch your design before going over various inking techniques.

By the end of the workshop, you'll be able to incorporate your new skills to create your own frame-able piece of artwork. The possibilities are endless! All materials for the workshop will be provided (but start thinking of a fun quote or some lyrics from your favorite song).

Decoupage Boxes & Vases Workshop

Thursday November 2, 2017: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Downtown Library: Secret Lab

This event is intended for grade 6 - adult

Using the classic decoupage process, crafter Dawn Henry will show you how to make a special box or vase using old maps, magazine pictures, or other items.

You can also bring any paper items (cards, pictures, newspaper, etc.) you would like to use to the workshop!
