Emerging Writers Workshop: A Writer’s Best Practices

Monday November 6, 2017: 7:00 pm to 8:45 pm -- Westgate Branch: West Side Room

This event is intended for grade 6 - adult

Writing is a solitary activity, but sooner or later, an author has to talk to other people. Whether meeting readers in a bookstore or a conference, or hanging out with fans (or potential fans) on social media, its important for writers to make a good impression. In this workshop, Alex Kourvo and Bethany Neal will share some memorable interactions with other authors, admit their own mistakes, and show you the best practices for navigating the world of writers and readers.

This is part of the monthly Emerging Writers Workshops, which offer support, learning, and advice for local authors. Each month, two weeks after the workshop, there is a meet-up where the instructors will read samples of your work and offer advice and assistance in a casual, supportive atmosphere. Do you have a completed manuscript? Consider submitting it to the library's imprint Fifth Avenue Press: fifthavenue.press.

Traditional Japanese Woodcarving with Mitsuaki Yokoya

Tuesday November 7, 2017: 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm -- Traverwood Branch: Program Room

This event is intended for grade 6 - adult

Join us for a lecture and live demonstration of traditional Japanese woodcarving by Master Mitsuaki Yokoya. He will be visiting from Japan to talk about the woodcarving process and show some of the steps to a completed sculpture.

Mitsuaki Yokoya was born in 1952 to a family of woodcarvers known for their Buddhist temple decorations in the Asakusa district in Taitō, Tokyo. As a third generation woodcarver, he inherited the title Soshu III. Before becoming a master, he spent years learning the art of Buddhist sculpture and design as an apprentice under four master carvers. His current work includes commissions for Buddhist art, architectural decoration, and restoration works.

This event in collaboration with the Japan Business Society of Detroit.

Be sure to visit the Detroit Institute of Arts on November 4 and 5 — a major Japanese cultural celebration will take place all weekend to mark the opening of the museum’s new gallery of Japanese art. In addition to enjoying the new gallery, visitors can take part in a variety of activities that they would otherwise have to go to Japan to experience. Most of the programs are free with museum admission. The full schedule of events is available on the DIA's website.
