Amazing! submitted by eapearce on January 6, 2015, 2:20pm Sure, I'm a little biased because I love both Jane Smiley and fiction set in the mid-twentieth century Midwest, BUT this book was really something. The first in a planned trilogy, the book focuses on all the members of an Iowan farm family. Time moves quickly in this book--each brief chapter encompasses the span of an entire year, but this doesn't detract from the story or the emotions that the characters experience. It was interesting to me how little Smiley chose to focus on some major world events of the time, but instead keeps the focus of the book intimately on the characters. Pearl Harbor, for example, receives only half a sentence of mention in the book, but one character's experience fighting in World War II is detailed intensely over the course of many pages. Some Luck is a unique and lovely read, and I cannot wait for the second book to come out in 2015!

Smiley creates realistic characters and settings, but this book is long on day-to-day detail and very short on plot and development. Apparently, that is what the author was striving for - to show the sameness of everyday life - but it doesn't hold my reading interest. I'm unlikely to read the rest of the trilogy.
