Old-Time String Music submitted by Meginator on June 27, 2020, 5:26pm This album of old-time string music absolutely blew me away. The Carolina Chocolate Drops incorporate a lot of different styles into their music and excel at each and every one of them, from a rollicking cover of “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops)” to vocals-only ballads. Every track is a welcome surprise, contributing to a deep exploration of American folk music performed with gusto and seeming ease despite the obvious difficulty in some of the instrumental parts. Everything comes together perfectly, blending the group’s obvious appreciation for folk traditions blended with a forward-thinking sensibility that is all their own, and the album sits at the pinnacle of the genre.
